A garden is a place where beautiful new things are grown. This painting shows a garden with an Asante wooden aku' abe fertility doll. This doll is used by Asante women who are having problems with conceiving a baby. A priest would provide the doll, the aku’aba was then carried, fed, bathed, and otherwise cared for by the woman as if it was a living baby. In so doing, it was hoped she would eventually conceive. Aku’aba dolls are thus not only artworks, but objects with a beautiful, sometimes sad story behind them. This painting attempts to convey the essence of this process.
